What Not to Pack

Back in the day, I was that girl who packed her entire home up for a week {end} getaway. Shh…this is a place of no judgment.

But now that I’ve been practicing the art of remixing, I don’t have to carry around everything and the kitchen sink! Please, learn from the mistakes I’ve made. Your slim suitcase and non-aching arms will thank me. {Gift cards and songs written in my honor are appreciated but not required.}

What Not to Pack:

  • Clothing items you don’t usually wear. Use Pareto’s law. 20% gives 80% of the results. Pack pieces from the 20% of your wardrobe you consistently wear. Don’t get stuck with a suitcase full of items you won’t utilize.
  • Shoes that don’t match the climate you’re headed to. No matter how cute they are, if they aren’t season appropriate {like suede shoes for a snowy mess} don’t put them in the bag!
  • Uncomfortable pieces. That shirt that you’re always having to readjust, the shoes that are a little too tight- just.say.no.
  • Any piece that doesn’t do at least double duty. If it doesn’t go with multiple items you’re taking, leave it behind.

That being said, here is a basic wardrobe you could pack into your carry on:

WNTP plus 13 days in a carry on

Try to look at these pieces loosely. Don’t have a striped sweater? Maybe a striped tee instead. Is a leather jacket more your style than a blazer? Swap that out. Or utilize an abstract print rather than a floral one.

You could easily add in another pair of pants or a skirt and tights to give you over 2 weeks worth of outfits in a carry on. Wear the bulkiest items on the plane- blazer, scarf, and tall boots and you’re good to go!

Are you going anywhere over the holidays?

    Oof. I wish I’d seen this before I came home. I packed pretty light though, at least compared to the staggering amount of clothing I brought home last winter break.

      And that’s the important part! Making progress :) Hope you have a fantastic break, girl!

      Leandra, here’s a post I wrote for packing a tropical getaway: http://greaterthanrubies.net/14-days-in-a-carry-on-tropical-edition/. If I were you, I’d adjust for whether you’ll be there for work or vacation, but use this as a stepping stone, since it’s hot weather. What are some similar pieces, and what are a few extras you could add (maybe an extra dress or two and another completer piece) to give you multiple options?
