the great purge

polka dots and plaid

grab your list and get ready to go back through your two categories! (if you missed yesterday’s post, i will likely sound like a jabbering crazy woman unless you click here.)

category refresher:

  1. pieces you love to wear and/or that match your list.
  2. items you rarely wear and/or are not on your list.

let’s start at the top. {one: love & list}

pull items that are in bad shape: stretched out, faded, in need of mending, etc. sort these items into two piles:

  • fix (take to a tailor or cobbler, dye, etc.)
  • get rid of

it’s ok if this is hard. i don’t like to say goodbye to a great piece even if it’s worn beyond repair. {case in point: i still have…and wear this sweater.} but these pieces have got to go. you will not feel good in pilled, shabby clothing. you just won’t. if you need a friend to help, go grab her. {kat, if you’re reading this, you should probably come over and refuse to leave until i throw out the sweater.}

as you purge, make a note of the items that you get rid of from this group and plan to find a replacement.

final step in this category: is there anything that doesn’t fit, has a bad memory attached to it, etc.? get rid of it! you don’t want that baggage when you’re picking out an outfit for the day.

let’s move on. {group two: rare & random}

think about these clothes. are they you? why are you keeping them?

if they’re not clothes you wear and they aren’t on your list, get rid of them. they’re taking up valuable physical and emotional real estate and need to go.

if you’re nervous you’ll say goodbye to something you might want down the road, hang it in another closet or box it up until the end of the month. make a note on your calendar to look at the items then. if you haven’t thought about them, they’re gone.

phew! operation closet clean out complete! next up? filling in the gaps.

    I am planning to do this over our Christmas break. No school for 2 weeks!
    I love this outfit! I love pattern mixing – and you do it really well. :)
    I emailed you a Christmas card – I hope your holiday is merry and bright!

      Yay for no school! How’s your break going? Aww you’re so sweet! I haven’t checked my e-mail since I’m also on a two week break from work. But I’ll have to check it out today. So sweet!

      Have a wonderful day, Selah!

        Well, our break isn’t going as planned. My son is sick, so we’ve had to cancel our after Christmas get-away. :(
        But, we got lots of new movies, books, and board games for Christmas, so we have plenty to do here at home. If he’s feeling better tomorrow we’re going to take the kids to see Monsters, Inc 3D.
        I got both of the tortoiseshell bracelets I wanted for Christmas. My husband got one and my son bought the other with his own money. He was so proud when I wore it to Christmas dinner. :)

          Oh no! I’m so sorry. I hope everyone is feeling better! Did y’all get to see Monsters, Inc.? I bet it’s awesome in 3D.

          Selah, that is so sweet. What a precious boy!

        He is very sweet.
        We didn’t get to Monsters, Inc. yet. We’re going to try tomorrow. We’ve seen Beauty and the Beast and Finding Nemo in 3D and they were awesome.

          3D makes everything better. I hope y’all get to go today!!

    I’ll have to sneak that sweater out of your closet!

      You’ll be so proud! I threw it away. I feel like “We Are the Champions” should magically begin playing.
