The Lovely Lookbook: Your Winter Go-To Look

The Lovely Lookbook: Your Winter Go-To Look

The Lovely Lookbook Button

Welcome to The Lovely Lookbook, a monthly link up to share your style and find outfit inspiration!

December’s TLL features Your Winter Go-To Looks, and we can’t wait to see them!

Our goal for The Lovely Lookbook is to help women of all shapes, sizes, and styles share their looks and find new outfits based on the theme of the month.

For each Lovely Lookbook, Sarah and I will share our height and the size of clothing we’re wearing as a reference to help show you how to dress your body.

We hope you’ll join us! We want you to share your style to inspire others, and if you’re trying to figure out your style, we want to help you look and feel amazing in your own skin and clothing!

Here are our go-to winter looks! Sarah spills on hers first:

Tucker Up

Tucker UpMy top and vest are both size small and from Old Navy. The top is stretchy, which I love for my winter go-to look because you are able to layer without feeling confined.

My pants are size 4 from Banana Republic, and are stretchy jeans, so that’s why I love them for this look. You can eat as much as you want at a holiday meal and not feel uncomfortable. :)

The Target plaid scarf is perfect because it keeps me so warm!

I’m 5’3″.

And mine:

Greater Than Rubies

Greater Than Rubies

My dressed down winter go-to look is a copy cat version of Sarah’s, so I wanted to show you the pieces I reach for when I need to look look a little fancier but still want to stay warm.

A top + a blazer + skinnies tucked into riding boots is how I roll. To stay warm, I almost always wear a cami under my tops in the winter for an extra layer of warmth. When I opt for a silky shirt like this one, I’ll reach for my wool blazer so I can stay nice and toasty.

My button up is a size small and from J. Crew Factory. The blazer was a J. Crew Clothes Mentor find. My pants are size 4 from Gap, and the boots are from Nordstrom Rack. I’m 5’11.

Enough about us- let’s see your winter go-to looks! Link up below, or if you’re new (we’re so glad you’re here!) and you want a little more info on TLL, this is how The Lovely Lookbook works:

The link up begins on the 1st of every month. So, on the 1st, visit Greater Than Rubies or Tucker Up to link up your styled item. We want you to share your style and/or find inspiration from how others styled their looks. Feel free to link up as many looks as you’d like. If you wear stripes every day for the next two weeks and want to link up each one, awesome. Just one? Perfect. If you aren’t a blogger, feel free to just stop by for some inspiration!

The link up will run for two weeks (today’s closes on December 14th).

Also, from the 1st through the 14th, you can vote for the next month’s topic. (Starting today, you’ll vote for January’s.) You can vote as many times as you want and even plead your case on social media to up your chances if you like! :)

On the 15th of every month, we’ll announce the following month’s theme.

All we ask is that you link your post(s) back to both of our blogs (Tucker Up and Greater Than Rubies). You don’t have to follow us, or give us your first born child to participate. :)

One last thing: if you’re working on figuring out your style, let us fill you in on a little secret. Both of us wear all kind of sizes to make sure we can get the fit of things right because every designer’s sizing is different. No one else sees the size on the tag, and if the items fit, all they notice is that you look put together!

We’re so excited about this opportunity to showcase a bunch of different ways that women style items they already own! Thanks for being part of that! Now link up those winter looks, browse for inspiration, and cast your vote!

November’s Lovely Lookbook features stripes, and here are our looks:

Striped Dress 007

Striped Dress 024

Sarah paired her striped dress with a jacket, which defines her waist (always a great idea if you’re wearing horizontal stripes!) and makes her look taller by creating a top and bottom half visually. The dark stripes and heels make the light colored jacket and statement necklace pop. It’s such a visually interesting outfit I can’t stop staring at it. (I promise I’m not a creeper! :))

Sarah’s dress is a medium and her jacket is a small. She’s 5’3″.

I wore a lot of striped looks in the 31 Days, 31 Ways Remix we just wrapped up at Greater Than Rubies. My favorite was this final look: a white button up, striped jacket, dark wash jeans, and leopard flats. Fancy-casual, if you will.

Stripes are a great pattern mixing candidate, especially a pinstripe. From far away it reads as a solid, so it’s perfect for pairing with leopard, floral, or dots. (Really any pattern you like!)

Greater Than Rubies

Greater Than Rubies

My button up is a small from Old Navy, the jacket is a small from Marshall’s, and the pants are a hand me down from Gap, size 4. My shoes were on crazy clearance at the Cole Haan Outlet
($50 down from almost $200.) Don’t you love a deal like that?! Oh! And I’m 5’11.

So there you have it, two striped looks for two different body types.

Let’s see yours! Oh! And a little reminder from us to y’all! We wear all kind of sizes to make sure we can get the fit of things right. Every designer’s sizing is different. No one else sees the size on the tag, and if the items fit, all they notice is that you look put together! Don’t be held captive to a size.

31 Days, 31 Ways Remix Day 6

31 Days, 31 Ways Remix Day 6

Welcome to Day 6’s Prompt for the 31 Days, 31 Ways Remix!

Today, your challenge is to add color, pattern, texture, and shine. Yes, all of it. Into one outfit. You can do it!

Day 6

Greater Than Rubies

Greater Than Rubies

This is one of my favorite outfits. The leather detailing on the shoulder of this top is a little edgy, mixed with floral, which I typically think of as sweet. I just really love making things that don’t typically go together work. Might be the control freak in me…

A few tips and tricks to get you started:

  • How to dress it up: Exchange the flats for heels, tuck in the top, and add a belt. You could also add a blazer or boxy jacket for a little extra air of sophistication.
  • How to dress it down: Trade out the statement necklace for a more subtle
  • Pick one of the adjectives to be the star player (color, pattern, texture, shine). I chose pattern, then added little touches of color (easy- already in the pattern), texture (silky top with the leather detailing on the shoulder, wool trousers), and the shellac-like-shine of the necklace and patent leather shoe. It’s a look I would wear during the day but not feel over the top. I did wear it, actually, for a presentation about Cornerstone to a room full of second graders, and I got lots of compliments. :)
  • If you don’t have an item with a couple of the adjectives built in, add them in your shoe or bag. Get creative! How can you add color, pattern, texture, and shine into one look that works for you?

We want to see your look! Share it with us using the hashtag #31days31waysremix on your Instagram, Pinterest, or Twitter account.

Welcome to The Lovely Lookbook, a monthly link up to share your style and find outfit inspiration!

Most times, we’ll throw in extra style tips, like we did when we announced The Lovely Lookbook.

We hope you’ll join us! We want you to share your style to inspire others, and if you’re trying to figure out your style, we want to help you look and feel amazing in your own skin and clothing!

September’s Lovely Lookbook features dresses, and here are our looks:

Tucker Up Dress

How gorgeous is Sarah?! I love this look of hers. I really really wish that I could borrow this dress and not look completely inappropriate. Sadly, I’d look like I was wearing a shirt and be arrested for indecent exposure, or it would definitely be stolen from her closet. ;)

Sarah’s dress here is a size small and it’s from Nordstrom. She’s 5’3″, but she looks so stinking tall in this photo. The soft neutral dress makes her look long and lean, because it creates one long visual line with her skin tone. (This is a great trick you can duplicate with any colored top and bottom!) The built-in waistline of the dress shows off her waist, and adding the polka dot jacket makes her look even tinier because it visually cinches in at the waist. I love the mix of feminine in the floaty dress and structured jacket and the soft blush paired with black leather. Adorable!  I could seriously go on and on about how much I love this look, but I know you’ve got places to go and people to see!

I chose to layer a top under my trusty shift dress for this month’s challenge. Layering is one of my favorite ways to switch up a favorite piece.

Greater Than Rubies

This dress is a size 4 from JC Penney, and the top is a medium from J. Crew Factory. I’m 5’11” and I wear all kind of sizes to make sure I can get the length of things right. I’ve come to realize that every designer’s sizing is different. For a while, I struggled with having such a wide spread of sizes in my closet, but no one else sees the size on the tag, and if the items fit, all they notice is that you look put together.

This combo has me thinking about other tops I could wear under this dress to change up the look, so you’ll probably see a few of those coming up on GTR! I also really like the button up collar peeking over the leather collar of the dress. Unique detailing like a leather collar, bright color, or embellishment helps classic pieces feel more modern, and again, pairing opposites like the masculine leather and girly polka dots always gives an outfit good visual interest.

So there you have it, two dresses styled differently and for two different body types. Let’s see yours!

We did it!!

I’m so proud of y’all! I know there were times when you wanted to give up, but you didn’t.

I have absolutely loved hearing your thoughts on the pieces you chose, what you were learning, and about how you’re viewing the rest of your closet. On top of that, there was so much outfit inspiration!

In case you’re just joining us, here is each week’s recap:

Before we call this challenge good, I want to share a few last looks:

Look 27

Greater Than Rubies

Greater Than Rubies

I loved mixing a girly peplum with boyfriend jeans and edgier accessories. Pairing a masculine piece with a feminine piece is one of my favorite combos.

Look 28

Greater Than Rubies

Greater Than Rubies

I opted for layers a few times this week because it was rainy and actually sort of cool- what?! Texas, where are you? I added a statement necklace under the collar for a little extra visual interest.

Look 29

Greater Than Rubies

This look was the result of another re-imagined dress + skirt combo.

The layers made it a little hot to wear as the weather heated back up, but it will be perfect for fall!

Look 30

Greater Than Rubies

Another pairing I really like to use to freshen up my closet is fancy + casual. A chambray button up and a sequin skirt make for a perfect date night outfit.

Look 31

Greater Than Rubies

Greater Than Rubies

It was hot, hot, hot again by the weekend, so I shed the layers. Monochromatic is another of my favorite ways to mix things up. Play with a variety of shades to keep the palette interesting, or go long and lean with a matchy matchy version.

I am really (really!) ready for the rest of my closet, but there are still tons of outfit combinations left over. I started out listing a few and decided to see how many I could come up with, and I ended up with a whole challenge worth’s more!

  1. blush tank + aztec skirt + jean jacket
  2. blush tank + sequin skirt (+ optional completer piece)
  3. blush tank + cut offs (+ optional completer piece)
  4. blush tank + trousers (+ optional completer piece)
  5. peplum top + white jeans (+ optional completer piece)
  6. peplum top + black maxi skirt (+ optional completer piece)
  7. peplum top + cut offs (+ optional completer piece)

  9. black tee + boyfriend jeans (+ optional completer piece)
  10. black tee + bermudas + chartreuse cardigan

  29. white button up + boyfriend jeans (+ optional completer piece)
  30. white button up + bermudas + completer piece

  32. white button up + cut offs (+ optional completer piece)
  33. striped dress + cream cardigan
  34. striped dress as a top + sequin skirt

When you start to think about how you could change out accessories, the number of outfits you can create gets almost overwhelming.

Cra.zi.ness.

Add in the rest of your closet, and you’ve got oodles of looks just sitting and waiting to be put together. More on exactly how to do that to come! :)

Before we kiss this challenge goodbye, here’s a look at all 31 looks I created in one place (week by week looks are all on the Summer Remix page), or individual looks are in each week’s post:

Greater Than Rubies

This month is flying by for me, but last week, I started getting a little tired of my pieces.

My schedule has been really different than usual this month, so it’s been challenging to come up with outfits that work for the activities we’ve had going on.

It’s also been cool and rainy…what?! It’s Texas. In July. These things do not normally go together.

But because of all that, I’ve come up with some different combinations that I wouldn’t have otherwise. I also realized I’d been resorting to the same types of combinations: tee with shorts or my maxi skirt, mostly. So I tried to reach for pieces I hadn’t worn much yet, and started pairing items together that I don’t usually, like my peplum top and shorts.

Here’s what I came up with:

Monday: Look 14

I wouldn’t normally think to pair the blush tank with the chartreuse sweater,
but everything else was dirty, and I ended up loving the way it looks.
Pairing unique colors together can give a look a more “grown up” feel.

Greater Than Rubies

Greater Than Rubies

After work, I changed into this to run a few errands. It was super comfortable and made me feel so chic. You can bet it’ll be on repeat after the challenge is over!

Tuesday: Look 16

This look was so easy and felt like I was wearing pajamas. Win. :) I wore it to a work meeting, and then changed into this:

Look 17

Greater Than Rubies

Greater Than Rubies

We took the afternoon off to hang out with my in-laws, who were in town for a family wedding last weekend. My MIL and I went shopping and I found the most amazing printed skirt at the Clothes Mentor for $16 to replace an old one of mine.

Wednesday: Look 18

Classic pieces never fail to look polished together. Styling them with fun accessories and a brightly colored cardigan (that I forgot for the photo shoot) make them look fresh and modern.

Greater Than Rubies

Greater Than Rubies

Thursday: Look 19

This was one of my favorite combos. It was raining, so I opted for a dress to avoid getting my pants wet, and went with simple flats. I added in a subtle pattern mix with the leopard belt, and grabbed the cardigan since it was a tad cool.

Greater Than Rubies

Greater Than Rubies

Friday: Look 20

This is what I planned to wear to the wedding. Unfortunately, it took us double the usual time to get from Dallas to Austin and we missed the ceremony completely. I didn’t have time to change out of the dress I had worn to a funeral that morning, so I partied in a non-challenge-approved dress.

Greater Than Rubies

Saturday: Look 21

Before we headed back, we meandered around Austin (and I took zero photos…what is wrong with me?), ate at um, several restaurants (they just have so many delicious options!) and caught up with friends. It was the perfect way to end the weekend trip.

Sunday: Look 22

It’s warming up again! This felt fresh and summery after a week of layers.
