Remix Rewear Restyle: Multiple Ways & How to Redeem The Worst Capsule Wardrobe

Remix Rewear Restyle: Multiple Ways & How to Redeem The Worst Capsule Wardrobe

Happy Tuesday, ladies!

How are y’all? I’ve missed you! This past weekend, we were in Seattle for a wedding, and while it was blissful and relaxing, we had no internet where we stayed, and thus, my carefully laid blogging plans went out the window. Yesterday morning, as I got ready to put up this post, I discovered my hosting was down. Yikes! Thankfully it’s all fixed now, and I promise to make it up to you this week with a few extra fun posts.

We’ll cover the final ‘how to’ post in the How To Build A Capsule Wardrobe series (shopping tips & tricks!) before moving into examples of specific wardrobes next week. I’ve also got a pretty infographic to help you with your next closet clean out, and a fun surprise up my sleeve as well.

Now, on to RRR! If you’re new, Remix Rewear Restyle is a weekly challenge to shop your closet and show us how you style a certain piece. Don’t worry about being right or wrong- there aren’t any rules except to include a piece that fits the challenge. So go shop that closet and link up your look!

Today, we’re sharing the pieces we use in multiple ways. Maybe you have a button up that doubles as a cardigan, a dress that you can wear as a skirt, or a cardigan you can button up, tie around your waist, and wear as a skirt…kidding, but in all seriousness, someone recommended that in a book I read once.

As for my contribution today? I have a confession. I totally bombed packing for Seattle weather. My looks today comprise the worst capsule wardrobe I’ve ever come up with. Ironic, no? By sharing it, my hope is to encourage you if you’re still feeling stumped when it comes to the wardrobe department. Curating a great closet takes practice- and you still won’t always get it “right.”

The key is to learn from your mistakes. When something doesn’t turn out well, take the time to ask why, and figure out how to avoid the same situation in the future.

Where did I go wrong? My biggest error was not planning well for the forecast. It promised sunny skies and temps in the 70’s. It was sunny, but windy, and stayed in the 50’s and 60’s. And definitely not a Texas 50 or 60, either. Instead of being able to remix items like I’d planned, I pretty much wore the few shirts I brought in various layers every day. Thankfully, they’re some of my hardest working pieces, so I was able to make them look different each day, but I was still cold. Next time, I will pack more layers and a warmer coat. And tights. Definitely tights.

What I packed:

  • black tee
  • striped long sleeve sweater
  • gray cardigan
  • maroon blouse
  • rain jacket
  • leopard print scarf
  • mint scarf
  • dark wash jeans
  • light wash jeans
  • shift dress
  • coco inspired jacket
  • ballet flats
  • boots
  • heels

Greater Than Rubies

The outfit combinations I came up with:

  1. mint scarf + gray cardigan buttoned up and used as a sweater + light wash skinnies + ballet flats
  2. mint scarf + striped sweater + jacket + light wash skinnies + ballet flats
  3. leopard scarf + striped sweater + gray cardigan + jacket + dark wash skinnies + riding boots
  4. mint scarf + black tee + cardigan + light wash skinnies + ballet flats
  5. maroon blouse + coco inspired jacket + dark wash skinnies + ballet flats
  6. shift dress + coco inspired jacket + heels
  7. leopard scarf + black tee + gray cardigan + dark wash jeans + riding boots

I didn’t end up wearing the maroon blouse because the silky fabric felt so cold against my skin, and the ballet flats only made it out of the house once because my feet were freezing. Another sweater or a button up would have been a better choice.

This was a great reminder that while pieces may work in theory, it’s always best to be sure you choose practically. Lesson learned. :)

It’s nice to have you back!
I think Mondays are perfect for RRR – even if I haven’t planned a post way in advance, I still have the weekend to get it together. :) Weekly works great for me – I’ve made it a regular feature on my blog. That being said, if it’s too often for you, I totally understand!

Thanks for the feedback, Selah! :)

I actually worried that everything was ok when you didn’t post yesterday. Haha. I’m glad you were just on vacation! I misunderstood today’s challenge and just remixed a skirt. I hope that’s ok! Feel free to delete my links if you want to!

Whitney- you didn’t misunderstand it at all! The remixes are totally open to interpretation. That’s a piece that you remix, and it’s perfect. Thanks for sharing it with us!

This post just makes me realize I need a mint scarf…

:) You can always borrow mine, too!

I’ve got nothing for you for this linkup because, as we both sadly know, my closet philosophy is diametrically opposite of yours. I rarely remix items because I have so many clothes, so little time. ;p

I can chime in on RRR in general though. As an avid linker upper, I love that you give the challenges a month in advance (see Anne @ SpyGirl who does the entire year! Love her!) because I plan my weekly outfits over the weekend. I love that it begins on a Monday because that’s easy to remember and gives me an entire week to play. What I most love is that RRR has a small cadre of regulars who not just link up with you but who also make their presence known by commenting here and on other linkers’ blogs so it feels less like a “look at me!” and more like a community. I’ve met and followed a good handful of people here because of this.

Keep it up, Caitlin. Wherever you go, I’ll follow. You’ve made a solid fan in me!

Oh, and ideas for RRR? Hrmmm…anything that doesn’t involve multiple outfits in one day. But I guess that suggestion defeats the point of “Remix Rewear Restyle”, eh? ;p

:) I totally agree with you- love the community of GTR/RRR! Thanks for the feedback, Maricel.

This week got super busy and crazy so I didn’t get around to linking up, but I like that we have them on a regular basis. I honestly wasn’t quite sure what to post this week, because I wear most of my clothes multiple ways so there were just so many options! I like doing it on a Monday, though, because it kind of starts of the week on a good and thoughtful note. Also, I’d be afraid a midweek thing would get lost in the shuffle. If it gets to be too much, maybe we could cut down to the first and third Mondays instead of every Monday, but I’m enjoying it the way it is right now.
For upcoming remixes – what about patterned bottoms? For most of us I would imagine that would be patterned skirts, but if anyone had patterned pants (or shorts, depending on the weather), they could wear those! A long time ago you mentioned styling a plain tee as an idea but people voted for other things. Maybe we could go back and do that idea!

Amy, I hope your week has started off well! I missed your comment before posting this morning, but I’ve saved your ideas. I love the patterned bottom idea and I think the plain tee is a great one, too. I’m squirreling those away for June :) Thanks for the input!
