Remix Rewear Restyle Link Up: Favorite Staples

Remix Rewear Restyle Link Up: Favorite Staples

Happy Monday, Remixinistas!

If you’re new, Remix Rewear Restyle is a weekly challenge to shop your closet and show us how you style a certain piece. Don’t worry about being right or wrong- there aren’t any rules except to include a piece that fits the challenge. So go shop that closet and link up your look!

This week, we’re sharing our favorite staples. As I thought about the things that have stood the test of time in my closet, I realized it’s an embarrassingly short list. I used to buy lots of inexpensive, trendy items that weren’t versatile. As a result, I felt I constantly had to acquire more to come up with additional outfits.

My intentionality over the last couple of years has resulted in a closet I love. The pieces I’ve added are classic and fit well, so I think if you were to ask me the same question in another 5 years, I’d have a much wider range to choose from.

That being said, here are a few of the pieces I’ve had for more than 5 years. Surprise, surprise, they fit well and they’re classic. {Please, please, learn from my mistakes and don’t waste your time, money, and closet space like I have!}

Yellow Belt
{One} This gray and white pinstripe button up is one of my favorites.
It fits well and plays nicely with casual pieces or work clothes.
It’s also the perfect weight, which means I can wear it year round.

#remixrewearrestyle boots
{Two} Tall boots. I had to retire my brown boots this year, but I plan to always keep both a black and brown pair as part of my closet. They’re warm, so easy, and pull together almost any outfit.

navy blazer
{Three} This navy boyfriend blazer has definitely earned its keep!
It was a piece I used in the winter remix and light enough I can wear it for spring, fall, and winter.

trousers
{Four} Last, but not least, these wool trousers are my favorite dressy pair.
I scored them off The Limited’s clearance rack back in college, and had my mom let out the hem so they would be long enough. They’ll be a star in my closet for years to come.

I’m excited to hear about your favorite staples! Link up your look below!

PS Today’s remix was inspired by Redress. This year, they are hosting monthly challenges to inspire sustainable fashion and encourage people to ‘redress’ items rather than throw them away. Their goal is to call attention to the impact our clothing choices have on the environment. Just the tiny bit I’ve peeked into the subject has made it clear that limiting purchases and disposal even slightly can have incredible effects. Beyond that, it’s a great place to look for outfit inspiration!

I remember some of these looks! Because I’ve revamped my wardrobe so much in the past 2 years, I don’t have individual pieces that have stood the test of time. So I did a wardrobe staple that is something I buy exactly the same of over & over.

Huzzah! I’ve finally managed to plan my outfits so I can participate in R3 on the day it starts! Thanks for hosting this, Caitlin. And thanks for making getting dressed that much easier.

Ah, the blazer and the button up! Had I not already committed to Anne’s In the Pink theme, I’d totally have worn those pieces in my “fave staples” outfit. I agree with you; definite workhorses!

So pretty! I am still on the lookout for a puffer vest…maybe I can score one now that spring is upon us!

5 years ago, I was in junior high. So honestly, I don’t think I have ANYTHING in my closet that I’ve had since the ninth grade. But I’m excited to see what everyone else comes up with!

    • Caitlin Author February 25, 2014 at 7:58 AM

Lol. I was in college…and it was tough to scrape a few items together that have made it this far. I was NOT a wise shopper back then. You have a lot of great pieces, so I think you’ll look back in 5 years and be proud about how many have stood the test of time.

      • Selah February 25, 2014 at 8:09 AM

Ha! It just dawned on me that part of the reason I don’t have clothes from 5-6 years ago is because I was wearing maternity clothes at that time!

        • Caitlin Author February 25, 2014 at 8:31 AM

That would definitely make a difference! :)

I was so glad to see those trousers from The Limited. I have several pairs in my closet and I’ve been wondering about keeping them or not. Trousers are all my all time favorite type of pants and I thought they were fairly timeless. Thank you for confirming that for me – they are keepers. Now, I must bite the bullet and get a few alternation done to them. :)

    • Caitlin Author February 25, 2014 at 7:59 AM

Yay! That’s awesome. With just a few alterations, you’ll have so many new options.

My staples have not gotten enough love! Thank you Caitlin for making me appreciate them more. Because they are staples they seem kind of boring on their own, but two of my items have kept me warm and pulled together in more than 15 years. That’s not boring, that’s amazing!

@selah: I often use tank tops as vests over a top (and sometimes a cardigan on top of the tank again). It works best with slightly loose-fitting tanks in thin knit – up where I live I often reach for a woolen (or wool/silk blend) tank!

    • Caitlin Author February 25, 2014 at 8:00 AM

Marteka, you are so welcome! Yes- I agree with you; it’s amazing! Staples can be boring on their own, but it’s all in how you style them. It sounds like you’ve got that down! Thanks for sharing the layering tips, too!

This was actually a great exercise for me! I think I get caught up sometimes in new, better, etc that I forget all the good stuff I have. As I was thinking about my closet, I kept coming up with stuff I like, so that is good news! :) I love the look with the trousers and tie neck blouse.

    • Caitlin Author February 25, 2014 at 8:05 AM

That’s great, Carly! I think we all struggle with that. It makes it a little easier when we can beat back the squirrel syndrome (new! sparkly! shiny!) together :)

  • Amy G February 20, 2014 at 2:55 PM

I was really surprised when I thought about my closet this week and realized how many things in it have been added in the last 2-3 years. I guess part of that has to do with graduating college and starting an office job during that time, which changed he types of clothing I wore on a regular basis. I’d like to think, though, that the things in my closet will be around for a while, though! Thanks for making us think about these things!
Also, as far as coming remixes, how about colored cardigans! I know most people have them because I’ve seen them worn in other remixes. Also, St. Paddy’s day is on a Monday this year, so we could do a green remix. I’m not real into that holiday, but I usually at least wear a green accessory just in case anyone asks where my green is. Or maybe we could go with mint?

    • Selah February 20, 2014 at 3:00 PM

Ooo, yes! St. Patrick’s Day remix! That would make my little Scotch Irish heart happy!

      • Caitlin Author February 25, 2014 at 8:06 AM

        :)

    • Caitlin Author February 25, 2014 at 8:06 AM

Amy- I was in the same boat! Graduating and life transitions tend to see a lot of wardrobe changes, but I think once you have a classic base, even that slims down. I’m excited we all get to take this remixing journey together and hope that in 5 years, we look back and have built really versatile closets that stand the test of time.

Thanks for the remix suggestions- they were great!

Hey Caitlin! I just wanted to know that I nominated you for the Liebster Award over on my blog, Our Yellow Door! I think your blog is lovely and I think others should know about it! Another blogger nominated me and gave me a couple questions to answer. It’s pretty much a way for bloggers to get to know other bloggers. I included a link to your blog at the bottom of my Liebster post, and listed out a few questions for you to answer if you would like. No pressure though…you have a lot of things to blog about, and I just wanted to let my readers know about you :)

P.S. – I LOVE this Remix series…I’m trying to pare down my wardrobe to classic essentials, and this is definitely helpful! Thank you!

    Under Grace,
    Rachel

It’s so inspiring to see how everyone styles their pieces, and I’m excited you’ve joined us! I’m looking forward to getting to know you better. Have a blessed week!
