our first shopping trip {in over a year}

yesterday was our first shopping trip since 2011! it was a great day of girl time and bargain hunting.

the most interesting thing was to see how differently we shop now. in the past, we would sort through, piece by piece, try mountains of things on and buy a significant amount of them. this time, we looked for specific pieces matching our lists, tried even fewer of them on, and only bought our absolute favorites.

neither kat nor i got very much {she found a fantastic pair of red-orange flats and some black skinnies and i found a mustard cardi and gorgeous burgundy wedges- brand spanking new at goodwill for $5. {holla!}

rather than second-guessing my purchases or feeling bad because i spent more than i wanted to, i felt great after this trip- i stayed {far under} budget and have items i know will mix and match well with my closet. no regrets here!

i headed out solo today and found a few of the other things on my list. here are some of my favorites!

the perfect nude pumps {payless}

little booties {on major sale at dsw!}

a coco-inspired jacket {over 75% off at kohl’s*}

& a gray leather jacket {forever 21}

polka dot tie blouse {target}

& a gorgeously feminine button up {lauren conrad for kohl’s*}

i got a few other items and ended up crossing a lot more off my list than i expected to! i can’t wait to remix everything. i’m thinking a capsule wardrobe remix may be on the horizon…

*ps there is a new exclusive 10% off code for kohl’s online! use the code TENFORBLOG january 11th through march 9th. it can be used to stack savings with one other department level code as well!

ps linking up at the pleated poppy for what i wore wednesday!

    New follower here- I just found your blog a few days ago, and I love it! I’m also a little in awe of your challenge… I’m not sure I could do that! I love the Proverbs 31 premise; it’s nice to meet other Christian wives :)

    • Caitlin January 4, 2013 at 7:47 AM

      Ashley! I’m so glad that you are here. It’s nice to meet you, too! Don’t feel like you have to; I think God calls us all to examine different areas and make changes in them. Shopping is just one that I really struggled with. Thanks again for stopping by. Have a fantastic weekend!

  • Kari Tarman January 3, 2013 at 7:28 PM

    Very cute stuff! I love the blouses from Kohl’s

    • Caitlin January 4, 2013 at 7:48 AM

      Thanks Kari! I love your new blog by the way and can’t wait to see what other projects you do!

  • Closet Strategy January 3, 2013 at 8:07 PM

    Well done!

  • Laura H January 3, 2013 at 8:20 PM

    SO cute. Love your picks… may even go check out a few for myself!

    • Caitlin January 4, 2013 at 7:48 AM

      Thanks Laura! I hope you find some great deals!!

  • lindsay January 3, 2013 at 8:54 PM

    so, i’m throwing around the idea of trying a less intense version of your challenge. i thinking of saying no “new” clothes this year. accessories would still be allowed (they would kind of have to be since i’m with noonday). just no new articles of clothing–thrifting and refashioning only. and, it would push my creative side in the refashioning and sewing areas. i’m not totally committed to this yet, but you’ve definitely inspired me. don’t think less of me if i decide not to ;)

    • Caitlin January 4, 2013 at 7:50 AM

      That’s a fantastic idea! It would absolutely stretch you if you decide to do it. And there is no way I’d think less of you! Have a great weekend!

  • Sarah Tucker January 3, 2013 at 9:40 PM

    Love love love all you new items!!

  • Selah January 3, 2013 at 10:56 PM

    I saw that polka dot blouse at Target today and it made me think of your list! Everything is lovely and very you.

    • Caitlin January 4, 2013 at 7:51 AM

      Too funny! I saw it and thought, “Oh my goodness that’s even more perfect than a black and white polka dotted one!” I may have even clapped my hands and done a little dance…

  • Iris January 4, 2013 at 8:10 AM

    Those are great pieces! I bet you had some Christmas gift cards too! With me just starting my fast I’m so excited about what I’ve been able to pick up with my Christmas gift cards. I could totally just remix the things I’ ve picked up! Again, thanks for your inspiration!

    • Caitlin January 4, 2013 at 5:53 PM

      Thanks Iris! Yes, I had some Christmas spending money :) That made shopping more fun. I hope you’re having fun remixing your new items!

  • kat January 4, 2013 at 9:09 AM

    You got the payless pumps! I have had those in mind since I saw them too…and I LOVE both jackets from kohls. Jealous!

    • Caitlin January 4, 2013 at 5:54 PM

      Thanks to you, dear friend! They’re SO comfy, too, with the comfort sole. Love them. And you should borrow my jackets :)

    • Caitlin January 4, 2013 at 5:58 PM

      Aww thanks, Rose! You’re too sweet. :) Hope you have a great weekend!

  • Aubree January 4, 2013 at 5:14 PM

    I emailed in my reader remix and got an out of the office reply. I hope you will still get it in time!

    Love the purchases btw. It will be fun to see you wear them but even without any shopping this year I don’t feel like your blog was repetitive at all!

    • Caitlin January 4, 2013 at 6:00 PM

      Hi Aubree! Yes, it’s still on time! I’ve been on vacation for the last two weeks, and not checking my e-mail, so I wanted to be sure no one expected a reply immediately. Thanks so much for sending it in! Can’t wait to see it :) Have a great weekend!

  • Niki January 9, 2013 at 7:38 AM

    I LOVE this outfit!!! And I’m obsessed with the booties from DSW!!

    • Caitlin January 9, 2013 at 10:07 PM

      Thank you, Niki! I know…the cashier asked me if I had a lot of ways to wear them in mind. I didn’t act like a crazy person, but inside I was thinking, “Are you kidding me?! YES!”

  • Cassi January 9, 2013 at 8:14 AM

    I need to go to Kohl’s I love that jacket!

    • Caitlin January 9, 2013 at 10:08 PM

      I just added the link to it above- and a code for 10% off if you order it online! I hope you find one in your size. I wore mine today and got lots of compliments. I might have a crush on it… :)

  • bennettaj January 9, 2013 at 9:03 AM

    Love all your great sales and finds!

  • Ashley January 9, 2013 at 10:29 AM

    I LOVE that black and white top from Kohls’! I always forget about Kohl’s, but then I see bloggers with great items so I need to remember to shop there :)

    I think your challenge was such a great idea! I don’t know if I could do “no shopping” for a year, but I started blogging my clothing purchases and that has really helped keep me in check. There are just so many other things that I would rather save up for!

    Oh and I’m a new follower :)

    • Caitlin January 9, 2013 at 10:11 PM

      Thank you, Ashley! I know…they have some great lines!

      That’s awesome! Intentionality in shopping is the key- no matter what that looks like for you! Otherwise it tends to rule you instead of the other way around…

      So glad you are here! Have a fantastic night :)

  • Robin January 9, 2013 at 11:02 AM

    I love the booties from DSW. What is the brand?

    Gorgeous outfit! I’m a Kohl’s fan too, and have been shopping with more forethought lately as well. Come check out my Kohl’s finds! =) Popped over from the Pleated Poppy.

    • Caitlin January 9, 2013 at 10:13 PM

      I’m so glad you did! LOVE the sparkly LC dress. Her line at Kohl’s is amazing and I’m definitely going to make that a regular stop now that I’m shopping again. Have a great rest of the week and thanks again for stopping by!

  • Lindsay January 9, 2013 at 5:20 PM

    Oh I love that feminine button-up from Kohls. Can’t wait to see how you wear it! Also love your look above. Neutrals but not boring at all!

    • Caitlin January 9, 2013 at 10:12 PM

      Thank you so much, Carolyn! I hope you’re having a fantastic weekend!

  • Kasey February 1, 2013 at 12:28 AM

    Hey girl! I found your blog through Tucker Up!
    Loving your blog so far, but I HAVE to ask you…where did you get your glasses from?? They’re the exact style that I’ve been looking for!

    • Caitlin February 1, 2013 at 4:50 PM

      Kasey- I’m so glad you did! They’re from Welby Parker. I think they’re called Crane and the color is something about a tortoise. Anyway, WP sends you up to 5 pairs to try at home and when you buy a pair, they give a pair to someone who needs them.
