How To Go From “Ok” Outfits To Feeling Put Together Every Time

Greater Than Rubies The Secret To Look Put Together Greater Than Rubies Greater Than Rubies Greater Than Rubies

I used to feel like my outfits were ok, but something was missing.

Now I have people tell me all the time that I always look polished and my outfits look “complete.”

They tell me this while their head is cocked to the side and they’re trying to figure out why. The second I share my secret with them, their whole face lights up and they GET IT. And the best part is, they know they can use what’s hanging in their closet to do the exact same thing!

It’s one of the first things I teach my clients, because it makes you look polished instantly!

It’s the Rule of 3.

Basically, you usually wear two pieces: a top and a bottom. If you add a third piece (whether that’s an actual piece of clothing like a cardigan, jacket, blazer- whatever!) or an accessory that’s big enough to read as a third piece visually, like a scarf, statement necklace, or hat, you’ll look more pulled together instantly.

Use The Rule of 3 to give yourself tons of polished outfit options this spring:

  1. Start your look with a top + bottom of your choice.
  2. Add a spring completer piece.

Here are a few specific outfit ideas and completer pieces you could use this spring– and even into summer!

Use them to shop your own closet for new-to-you looks or add a piece or two to your shopping list.

Disclosure: I may make a small commission if you purchase an item by clicking the links below.

Option 1: Layer a completer piece over your top, like a cardigan, jacket, blazer, vest, etc.

This is what I usually reach for to stay warm on cool spring days!

If you opt for one of these, you’ll also look slimmer instantly!  The eye visually “cinches” the fabric between the edges of the completer piece and “sees” your waist as smaller.

A few of my favorites this spring are this camel blazer (it’s a knit blazer, so it’s super easy to dress up or down!), this ruffled leather jacket I can’t stop reaching for, and my anorak jacket.

Here are a few other great options:

Option 2: A scarf.

This is probably the most versatile completer piece,
because you can tie a scarf SO many different ways to create unique looks.

Option 3: Statement jewelry.

Statement jewelry dresses up everything from a basic tee to your little black dress!

Option 4: Hats.

I especially love a straw hat to dress up a simple dress
or a basic tee, jeans, and sandals.

Here are a few at different price points.

Psst! If you aren’t sure you can pull off a hat,
this post and this pinboard are for you!

I want to know- which completer piece do you have on repeat right now?

You’re a Gem!
