CHOOSE THE TIMELINE THAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU

Just want a little taste to see if it’s right for you?
Try one month or make a packing list for your next trip.

Ready to go all in?
Pick a season:
Spring (March – May) / Summer (June – August) / Fall (September – November) / Winter (December – February)

Somewhere in between?
Don’t worry about doing it “right.” Just fill in today’s date and an end date.

Pick a goal that’s realistic but stretches you.
If you’re a planner, pick the upcoming season. Know yourself and that it’s now or never? Get moving!

Make it work for you!

LIFESTYLE & WORD ASSOCIATION

These pieces will help you create a capsule wardrobe that really works for you and your life.

It’s easy to overthink these pieces or feel like you have to get them “right.”

Give yourself a deadline by setting a timer for 10 minutes apiece and move on when you’re finished.

PAGE 3

BRANDS

Not sure which work best for you?

No worries! No one really teaches us how to figure that out. Schedule a day to go to the mall (or a few local stores) and try on the basic pieces (sleeveless, short sleeve and long sleeve tops, completer pieces (jackets/blazers/cardigans), pants, skirts, shorts, and dresses) and take pictures and/or notes.

Which look the best? Feel the best? Shop there in the future!

Not sure you’ve got a grip on what looks best on your body?

This post includes general fit guidelines,
And this course includes a step by step how to by body shape.

COLORS

This is one of the biggest questions I get from clients and readers!

My suggestion is to follow the prompts listed on the worksheet to really figure out what you’re drawn to, browse the color palettes herethen look at your closet to finalize your color scheme.

Taking just a few minutes to go through the thought process will help you see if there are gaps
between what you like and what you have.

But remember, these are all guidelines you can bend and break to fit your life. If you’d rather start in your closet and choose a palette from that, go for it!

Make it work for you!

MY GO-TO PIECES

Most of us wear 20% of our closet 80% of the time.

What are those pieces for you?
Why do you like them so much?
What pieces do you have with similar characteristics?

If you aren’t sure, that’s ok!
Jot down the pieces you know you LOVE
and just start asking yourself what you like
about your favorite pieces.
The answers will come.

MY GO-TO OUTFITS

Short Sleeve: Tank / Tee / Short Sleeve Blouse
Long Sleeve: Long Sleeve Blouse / Button Up / Sweater

And Dresses

AT THIS POINT, YOU MAY BE WONDERING, HOW DOES MY CLOSET FIT INTO THIS?

Here’s a super simple way to organize your closet to prep for a capsule wardrobe
(or just to make it super easy to get dressed every day!)

IS THERE ANYTHING IN YOUR CLOSET THAT IS…

THE WRONG SEASON?

Move these pieces somewhere else, like a storage box under the bed
so they’ll be out of your way each day, but ready when the season rolls around.

Bonus: schedule a recurring calendar reminder to prep for each season.
(February, May, August, and November will put you a month before each season starts.)

THE WRONG SIZE?

Get rid of or move these items somewhere else, so you don’t start off every day
with the subconscious reminder that you can’t wear them.
Set yourself up for success!

SOMETHING YOU KNOW YOU’LL NEVER WEAR AGAIN?

Get rid of anything stained, worn out, or that deep down, you know you’ll never wear again.
Take a deep breath, and let.it.go. You can do it!

OR YOU CAN’T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME YOU WORE IT?

These are the items that you aren’t quite sure why you haven’t worn them.
Maybe the color or fit is off, you paid a lot for it, it has sentimental value, etc.
Move these things to another spot or the back of the closet.

NOW FOR THE FUN PART!

Donate, swap with a friend, or sell the items you decided to get rid of to fund your new additions.

You should be left with things that you LOVE and would wear right now.
If you spot a piece that shouldn’t have made it through the edit, pull it now.

Again, don’t sweat doing it “right.” You can always get rid of more later.

Did you think of or notice anything while you simplified your closet?
Jot it down on your Go-To Pieces or Go To Outfits lists,
then fill in your shopping list below!

SHOPPING LIST

At this point, it’s important to review:

First, how many pieces do you have that you LOVE
and plan to wear during your capsule wardrobe?

Second, does your original time frame still feel like a good fit?

Next, decide what you’ll count as a ‘piece’…

This is what I do- choose what works for you!

These count: every day and weekend wear.

These don’t: shoes, accessories, work out clothes, underwear, etc.

It’s time to choose a capsule!

Small Capsule: 8-16ish Pieces
Can create 30+ looks; perfect for travel!

Medium Capsule: 15-24ish Pieces
Can create dozens of looks; great for a month-long challenge.

Large Capsule: 24-50ish Pieces
Can create an entire season’s worth of looks.

Make a note of any additions you think you’ll need.

Want more direction on what to add?

8 pieces can create 29 looks. (Here’s how!)

Don’t feel like that’s enough?

Try tripling it with:
8 casual pieces + 8 dressy pieces + 8 in-between pieces,
and add in as needed.

BUDGET

Now is the time to get brutally honest.

Is the shopping list you have realistic for your budget?

If not, scale back and start a little smaller.
You could even challenge yourself to use only the clothes that are already in your closet.
Most ladies have at least 50 “new” looks hanging in their closet-
My average-size closet had more than 365!

That being said, here are a few ways to stretch your dollar:

One: sell like-new items to fund your purchases
via Thred Up or eBay Valet.

Two: shop consignment stores like The Clothes Mentor, Thred Up,
or Plato’s Closet for designer brands at a steal.

Three: look for a mix of inexpensive and investment pieces.

Personally, I pay more for pieces that are classic,
and less for trendy items.

Here are a few specific examples:
I pay more for shoes (they have to be comfortable),
things I wear over and over (like dark wash jeans),
and items that are hard for me to find (dresses).

The cost per wear ends up being much less than a $20 item I bought somewhere else that shrinks and isn’t wearable after the first wash.

Remember, no one knows how much you spent on something!

It’s how you style your pieces that makes them look expensive.

MY CAPSULE WARDROBE

You did it! You planned, shopped, and are ready to go!!
Make a final list of your items here.

Put your Go-To Outfit List in a handy spot, and get started!

A few things to keep in mind:

You might not love every outfit you come up with.
That’s ok- I guarantee you’ll learn a ton about your style!

Remember to give yourself a little grace.
If you need to add in an item from the rest of your clothes
or buy an item for a something you didn’t foresee, don’t feel guilty!

As you go, jot down what you’re learning on the righthand side
of the worksheet to get the most out of this challenge.

FINAL TIPS + LESSONS LEARNED

If you ever feel stuck, check your Go-To Outfit List or Pinterest for ideas.

Get creative and enjoy learning how to use what you have well.

And if you need a little help or have questions along the way,
just say the word!

Have SO much fun!

P.S. After the challenge, you don’t have to get rid of the clothes from
your ‘I can’t remember the last time I wore this,’ group,
but after a season or two, if you haven’t pulled them out,
it’s a safe bet you won’t wear them again.
Let them go to make room + bless someone else who could use them!

FIRST THINGS FIRST

SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS

Building a capsule wardrobe from scratch requires a lot less work than shopping your closet,
but there are still a few things you can do to make it easier!

GRAB YOUR FAVORITE NOTE TAKING SUPPLIES AND LET'S GET STARTED!

STEP 1

STEP 2

DRAFT YOUR CAPSULE GUIDELINES

Decide what you’ll count as a ‘piece’…

This is what I do- choose what works for you!

These count: every day and weekend wear.
These don’t: shoes, accessories, work out clothes, underwear, etc.

Then choose a capsule…

Small Capsule: 8-16ish Pieces
Can create 30+ looks; perfect for travel!

Medium Capsule: 15-24ish Pieces
Can create dozens of looks; great for a month-long challenge.

Large Capsule: 24-50ish Pieces
Can create an entire season’s worth of looks.

Want more direction on what to add?

8 pieces can create 29 looks. (Here’s how!)

Not sure that’s enough? Try tripling it with:
8 casual pieces + 8 dressy pieces + 8 in-between pieces,
then add in as needed.

STEP 3

SHOP YOUR PIECES

I chose these pieces so you can shop right down the line for the season!

Pick all casual, all dressy, all in-between or a combination.

If you’re using the ‘8 Piece’ plan mentioned above,
pick two from the sleeveless + short sleeve category,
two bottoms, and one of everything else!

The colors and patterns will all look great together
because they’re mostly neutrals and jewel tones (which look amazing on every complexion!)

You can also use the idea to shop your favorite store in a similar fashion.
