Free Style: Borrowing From the Stars

Free Style: Borrowing From the Stars

Greater Than Rubies

Has anyone ever told you you look like a certain celebrity?

I’ve heard Mandy Moore, Sandra Bullock, and Kate Middleton. What do you think? (I’m giving you my best Tyra smize above to help you envision it. :))

While I’d love to steal any one of their closets (and also Kate Middleton’s hair), it’s totally possible to borrow inspiration from them to create new looks with your own closet.

Borrowing from celebrities is one of my favorite tricks, because they pay stylists to avoid ending up on the worst dressed list. You can easily benefit from the thousands they pay with $0 and a few minutes of your time.

In this month’s Free Style column for Live & Prosper Magazine, learn:

  • How to copy a star’s look for less;
  • The trick to coming up with variations of a celeb’s outfit;
  • How to incorporate style from a star with your body type and the tweaks to consider when you’re a different shape.

I’ll also share:

  • Two examples from my closet (one straight up copy because I’m an outfit stealer, and one I used as inspiration);
  • Two outfit ideas for you to try with your closet today.

To read the article, click here and turn to page 46.

Now, I want to hear from you! Who have you been told you look like? And who’s style would you most love to steal?

Bonus points: come up with a “new” look based on one of theirs, and send the photo to me (skidmore dot caitlin at gmail dot com) to be featured on GTR later this month.

Just sign up for the e-mail list on the righthand side of the page! If you signed up before this past weekend and want the guide, just shoot me an e-mail at skidmore dot caitlin at gmail dot com, and I’ll send one your way. Happy almost-weekend, gorgeous!

    Oh, too funny – I just posted a Jackie Kennedy inspired outfit! I love her style, particularly in casual vacation photos. I also adore Audrey Hepburn’s style.

    I’ve been told I look like Natalie Merchant (lead singer for 10,000 Maniacs), Delta Burke (back when she was on Designing Women), and Disney’s Snow White. Basically, I have dark hair and pale skin.

    I can see a little Kate Middleton in you.

      Jackie Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn are so classic- they wore such great fitting pieces that a lot of their looks are still in style.

      I don’t know who Natalie Merchant or Delta Burke are, but I can see some Snow White in you! I love the combo of dark hair and pale skin- so pretty!

      • Selah June 14, 2014 at 1:24 PM

        Well, I never really saw the Natalie Merchant comparison anyway. Delta Burke is older now, and has had a bit too much work done, but here she is during her Designing Women days:

        Thank you! My coloring is one of my favorite things about my looks. :)

        • Caitlin Author June 25, 2014 at 7:29 AM

          I see a little resemblance! :)

    This is great Caitlyn! I love Reese Witherspoon’s style. I’ve pinned so many of her outfits to recreate. Her comfy momma style is my comfy momma style!

    • Caitlin Author June 14, 2014 at 12:59 PM

      She does always look comfy and cute. Perfect example! :)

      Iris, are you willing to share a link to your Pinterest boards? Would love to take a look!

      • Iris June 15, 2014 at 1:23 AM

        Hi Carly! Sure…except I’m not sure how to do that…lemme get back to you when I have some time on the computer.

    I’ve never been one to seek out celebrity style, but I like your approach to it here – it’s about borrowing the tips they get from their professionals, not trying to be like them or copying something just because it’s that specific person that wore it.
    I don’t think I’ve ever been told I look anyone famous. I’m ok with that though. I couldn’t help but notice, though, that I wore an outfit recently like one of the celebrity inspiration photos you used in your article. Last month I attended a Christian women’s retreat at a fancy hotel with my mom and some other relatives and I wore a white dress with black polka dots, a black cardi, and black shoes to dress up for dinner. I guess I was copying Princess Kate without knowing it, haha!

      It sounds like it! :) I love how you said it- you’re exactly right. The point isn’t to try to be like them or copy something because they’ve worn it; it’s to borrow from their tips and use their looks for inspiration.

    I get Anne Hathaway all the time. Also, you look a LOT like Broadway star Laura Osnes who originated the role of Cinderella (and Kate Middleton! You’re destined to be a princess! :)

    • Caitlin Author June 14, 2014 at 1:06 PM

      I totally see Anne Hathaway in you! I hadn’t heard of Laura Osnes before, but thanks for the compliment- she’s gorgeous! Hope you’re having a great weekend, Ashley!

    I’ve never been told I look like a celeb but I want to LIVE in Zooey Deschanel’s closet. I just love her. She’s adorable and I love her classic with a twist style.

    • Caitlin Author June 14, 2014 at 1:07 PM

      Yes! She is adorable, and always looks like a perfect blend of classic and modern- great inspiration, Meghan!

  • Carly June 13, 2014 at 9:41 PM

    I love this! I haven’t given this too much thought before, but I did a bit of hunting and started a celebrity style board to pin some inspiration. Great ideas!

    • Caitlin Author June 14, 2014 at 1:07 PM

      Fun! I’m excited to see what you come up with :)

      • Carly June 14, 2014 at 1:49 PM

        I have to say, I uploaded my photo to a celebrity look-alike generator thing and the first one I did said my closest match was Martha Stewart. Not sure I see that… :) I did a second one and came up with a few that seemed more up my alley and I also thought of Jennifer Garner – not that I look like her, but I can relate to her age, style, stage in life, etc so I am taking a look at her style. Katherine Heigl was another one that was a partial match for me, and I like some of the looks I’ve seen from her.

        • Caitlin Author June 25, 2014 at 7:31 AM

          Lol! No, I don’t see Martha at all. :) That’s a great way to think of it- even if you don’t look similar, think about stars whose age and life stage are a good fit. I really like Katherine Heigl’s style in a few of her movies. I don’t feel like I’ve seen many real life photos, but I bet she’s got great taste!
