december {and 2012} musings

this year

  • flew by
  • dragged {the last two weeks}
  • pushed me to grow in ways i wouldn’t have otherwise
  • brought new friends {all y’all!}
  • opened my eyes and taught me so much.

experiments like the challenge and i have a love-hate relationship. they reveal my heart and things the Lord wants to teach me. it can be painful, but i crave it. otherwise, i’m complacent and life is boring.

honestly, i can’t believe it’s over. starting a blog and posting outfits while not buying anything new was difficult, but actually refreshing the majority of the time.

it also broke my idolatry of buying things. honestly though, taking one idol away just exposed others. the Lord opened my eyes to my pride and selfishness- not so attractive.

now i’m working through figuring out a balance. removing a temptation totally was good, but it didn’t allow me to flex my ‘moderation’ muscles. there was no chance to consider buying something then decide i really didn’t need it. moving forward will be the true test.

in 2013, rather than a year-long focus, i’ll study the proverbs 31 woman a few verses at a time and have month-long experiments. {not a fan of wonder woman? before you groan, read this.} i want this to be something that is life-giving and not guilt-inducing. we can be godly, great women without being pintastic, perfect ladies. {in case you’re like me and fall into the trap of thinking those exist, they don’t.}

today one year ends and a new one begins. thank you so much for your friendship, for reading, and for sharing pieces of your lives with me. i love doing life together. happy new year, sweet friends!

    Congratulations! Happy New Year sweet friend!
    I’m going to be spending this week going through the steps you’ve outlined and creating my shopping list. I actually got a very large Christmas bonus (yay!) and I’ve designated some of it for clothes but I want to be very careful and buy things I really love. Thank you so much for the inspiration and advice!

    Congratulations! Would you believe that I JUST stumbled upon your blog 2 days ago? You have such great style! Thank you for sharing it with us. I have a quick question for you… where have you found all of your longer necklaces? I browsed your entire blog and you have a few really beautiful very long ones. Thanks!

      Thank you! I am so glad you did. Most of them are from Forever 21. There’s one that has pearls and a blueish stone and that one is from Nordstrom’s. I hope that helps! Let me know if there’s a specific one you want to know. Have a great night!

    Hi! I just found your blog before Christmas and I am so inspired! I am a Christian and have been struggling all my life with this same idol. I was inspired to do the same as you in 2013 and not buy any new clothes. I have so many clothes that my walkin closet is not big enough. You have inspired me so much to put away this idol once and for all with His grace. May the Lord bless you as you move forward in learning moderation. Elena

      Elena! I’m so glad that you wrote. I am REALLY excited about this year and all the things the Lord will teach you through it. I hope you’ll continue to share your journey with me. May He bless you greatly for your obedience to Him!!

    SO PROUD OF YOU, CAITLIN!!! I’ve told you before, but I have LOVED and so so so so appreciated the journey you’ve been on and for sharing it with everyone on a blog. I get quite a few emails from other women who ask advice from me about worshipping Jesus but having shopping as an idol, and I always point them to your blog. It’s such a fantastic journey to have documented, and while I can only imagine some of the tension you must have felt with having a blog and not having new things to “wow” people with, I’m so grateful that you set aside your own pride to do it. You give courage to others (to myself included) and honestly I don’t think you even know how much your journey is going to help women seek more of God in the long-run!

      Aww Audrey! You’re going to make me cry. Thank you for your encouraging words. And thank you for your great remixing tips!! Your blog was so helpful in getting through the year! Happy New Year, sweet friend!
