Confession Time: A Full 12 Pieces Challenge Update

Confession Time: A Full 12 Pieces Challenge Update

Y’all, I have a confession to make. I may have reached a tad bit ahead on the calendar with my 12 pieces additions.

It’s just that sometimes finding things that fit perfectly can be so rare that you have to take advantage of your discoveries when you find them, even if it breaks the rules a little bit.

Here’s a quick look at my additions so far:

January: lace top

Greater Than Rubies

February: striped dress

Greater Than Rubies

March: coral top

Greater Than Rubies

April: radiant orchid dress

Greater Than Rubies

May: polka dot button up

Greater Than Rubies

I technically broke the rules by already purchasing my June item. (Ok, not technically. I did.) It’s a sleeveless structured white peplum top, which is a shape I don’t have in my closet, and I plan to wear it with my pencil skirts, maxi skirt, and summer skinnies for the next couple of months before adding completer pieces to transition it into cooler temps.

Because I’ve taken the time to define my style, simplify my closet, and figure out what pieces would make my wardrobe even more versatile, when they come along, if they’re not going to break my budget, I’m probably going to get them.

I’ve also made a few replacements.

A pair of my old tennis shoes wore out, so I used that chance to buy some tennis shoes I love. (For some reason buying tennis shoes I actually like to wear as part of a non-workout ensemble is hard for me.) They’re retro and I wore them for Cornerstone’s golf tournament (our most successful fundraiser to date!!), but they’ll also be perfect for sightseeing on our upcoming vacation. They go with a lot of my casual tees, and will even work with a lot of my pants, shorts, and all my work out clothes.

This month, I replaced a few stained tees, and my beach cover ups, too. They were literally from junior high, and I was mistaken as a 16 year old twice in the last month, so I figured it was time for an upgrade. I chose these printed pants (which if I can pull it off without Troy disowning me, I think I’ll end up wearing them outside of beach days, because they’ll be so cool during the blazing hot Texas summer), and this scarf to use as a sarong. It was buy one scarf get one free, so I scored my long-awaited floral scarf, too!

Greater Than Rubies

So far, emotionally, I feel pretty good. It’s much harder to only buy a few pieces than it was to not shop or shop freely, which is not at all what I expected.

While there are still a few things I want to add, I’m feeling overwhelmed with how remixable my closet is, and want to focus on shopping my own closet for new looks.

With that, I’m considering doing a ‘What to wear with…’ series that would cover basics most of us have in our closets. Is that something that you would be interested in?

If so, please let me know in the comments below, and share a specific item you’d like to see remixed.

Is there any specific item you’d want to see as part of that series?

All the pieces you have bought are amazing. I’m still so in love with that purple dress!

Thanks! I am, too :D If you ever want to borrow it, just say the word!

Thanks for the update! I think you’re right that when things fit just right, it’s often too rare to pass up. I’m excited to see how you style your early June find!
The what to wear with basics series sounds interesting. I can’t think of a specific item off the top of my head to start with, though!

It doesn’t have to be a basic- if there’s a trend you like you’re not sure how to remix, I’m definitely open to featuring that. if you’ve got one of those on your mind!

I so appreciate your honesty! I have to admit I’ve been struggling with whether or not I can justify making a purchase outside of my budget if it’s the perfect item. It’s not that I don’t think it’s okay; I just know that I could easily stop being honest with myself about what I truly need vs. what I want. You seem to be doing it carefully and wisely though, and I really respect that.

Also, I think a “What to Wear With…” series is a great idea :)

Ah! Maria, you are so right. It’s a slippery slope to purchase carefully and be honest with yourself about what you truly need v. want. I appreciate your kind words- I’m sure trying to! It’s easier when I know I have to tell you all how I’m doing :)

  • Audrey @ Putting Me Together May 22, 2014 at 11:07 AM

AH, I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets mistaken for being over a decade younger than they are. (!!!!!!) Your new additions are AMAZINGGGGGGGGGGGG.

    • Caitlin Author May 22, 2014 at 6:23 PM

Lol oh no! Fist bump for looking young. I’m sure one day I will appreciate it, but for now, not so much. :)

  • Iris May 22, 2014 at 9:13 PM

Thanks for being honest in your update. I love that you are doing this. It does seem like a tricky challenge. I would love to see posts on what to wear with… stuff. How about a few posts on summer staples? Shorts, tanks, dresses, skirts, etc.

Great ideas, Iris! Thanks :) Have a great weekend!

Great choices! I agree, it is soooo hard to limit yourself than to not shop at all. You did a great job.
