a timeless capsule wardrobe

girls night

remixing is something i didn’t consciously do before this year.

i’ve always liked wearing new combinations, but that used to be achieved solely through new items making their way into my closet. before troy and i got married, i bought a lot more than i do now- yay for marriage accountability! but after i became mrs. skidmore, i was still combing thrift stores and buying new items every month to freshen up my look.

the problem was, i bought without knowing what my style was and with no thought as to how those pieces would work with the rest of my wardrobe.

as a result, so many things sit in my closet, unworn- and if there was ever a time to wear them it would have been this year.

let’s face it- we’ve all wasted money on clothes that don’t make us feel great. today, i’m launching a series called the timeless capsule wardrobe. we’ll look at fashion trends from the 1900’s to today and come up with a basic capsule wardrobe that won’t go out of style- regardless of personal style, age, weight, etc. then, we’ll taylor our finds to create individual wardrobes from pieces that mix and match to create endless possibilites.

  1. spend less money
  2. buy better looking and fitting clothes {meaning our clothes make us feel better instantly!}
  3. have money left over to spend in other ways

who’s with me?!

I just started reading your blog this week as I’m trying to think more intentionally about remixing my wardrobe. It has been so helpful!! I can’t wait for this series.

Awesome idea! I am trying hard to work towards a more capsule-style wardrobe as well, with classic pieces that reflect my personality, flatter my body, and fit my lifestyle. I can’t wait to follow along with you in this series!

I’m really looking forward to this! I’m so excited because this will be such an encouragement to me this upcoming year! I too have had a really hard time finding my “style” and I can’t wait to really start saving money and still feel up to date with my clothing!

  • Evi December 3, 2012 at 5:44 AM

    Love the idea!

  • Rachel G December 5, 2012 at 6:32 AM

That’s a great idea! I’ve never really had a problem with wasting money on clothes I don’t wear much, because my personal rule is that I’ll only buy a piece of clothing if I’m absolutely in love with it. I never buy clothes because they’re a good deal or practical or in style–because if I don’t love it, I know I won’t get my money’s worth!

    • Caitlin December 5, 2012 at 7:55 PM

That is a GREAT rule to have, Rachel! Props to you for being so disciplined and wise with your clothing purchases!

  • Clare December 5, 2012 at 9:54 AM

I’m down with your goals! I’m totally revamping my closet/life with similar goals! Good luck!

I think that sounds like a great idea! I have the same problem (remixing by buying, rather than shopping my closet).

Also, I love this look – great color palette. :)

  • Alisa December 5, 2012 at 6:53 PM

I have so many pieces I bought without a purpose that I ended up giving away, even with the tags still on them. I try not to buy now unless I can’t live without it. Great Post!!!

    • Caitlin December 13, 2012 at 8:00 PM

Girl, you and me both! :) That is a great rule of thumb to have! Hope you’re having a great week!
