a hate-love relationship

i have a hate-love relationship with working out.

the hate comes first because it’s like a war within me to get myself to the gym, but i always love it after the fact. i feel refreshed, energized, and ready to take on the world. but the next day, my brain selectively recalls the hate, and the battle begins anew.

i’ve read all kinds of tips on how to get yourself motivated to work out, from setting your shoes next to your bed the night before to this app that fines you if you break your fitness promises.

but i just side step the shoes and i’m too cheap sign up to pay up if i don’t go, so i’ve decided to try a new tactic. i’m on a mission to find things that don’t feel like working out to get myself in the groove.

last night i went to my first zumba class. it absolutely met the criteria of not feeling like a work out, while sneakily getting a great one. as an added bonus, it was highly amusing. i cannot shake my body like my talented zumba-mates, and during the class dance off, i couldn’t stop giggling (at myself, not them. i’m pretty sure i looked like a dysfunctional robot.)

today, for the first time, i’m looking forward to heading back to the gym…hopefully it sticks!

what about you? do you have a favorite work out or way to keep yourself accountable?

Zumba! So fun–and tiring! I got an exercise machine thingy on Craigslist that can fold up, and I workout while watching my four favorite shows on Hulu through out the week. It’s SUPER motivating for me, because I feel like I’m wasting away if I’m just sitting around watching TV, and I’m addicted to the shows, so I feel compelled to watch and therefore workout. It’s hard in the summer when shows are off season, though!

Audrey, that is such a great idea! I’ve heard about Hulu, but haven’t checked it out. Thanks for the idea!

I love Zumba! I was the same way with exercise and it helped make it fun!

Um, as to the working out, I’ve got nothin’.

I LOVE this outfit! I’m a huge fan of black and navy and you’ve done it beautifully. Is that a locket or a watch on your necklace? Either way, it looks great!

Selah, lol. You make me laugh.

Thank you! It’s a watch. My mom recently gave it to me and it was my great-grandma’s, so it’s extra special! Hope you’re having a great week!

I wish I could say yes! but I struggle with getting to the gym too! I’ve never done Zumba b/c I have no rhythm but like you said maybe it will just be funny and not feel like a work out at all!

    • Caitlin October 10, 2012 at 8:24 PM

Girl, I have no rhythm either! At least not Zumba rhythm :) Chances are, there will be someone with less rhythm than you and if not, who cares? (That’s what I told myself before I went and it was true!)

I’ve found the most effective way to help myself get off the couch is to say my little mantra: “Just show up.” It’s all about coming as I am and doing something beneficial for my body. It usually works. :)

I’d love for you to stop by my blog- I’m currently hosting my October giveaway along with free ad space. Happy Wednesday!

Veralynn, that’s a great idea- especially because getting there is usually more than half the battle! Thanks for sharing :) And for the invite! I’ll definitely be over to check out your blog. Thanks for stopping by and have a great night!
