31 Days, 31 Ways Remix: Day 1 Prompt

31 Days, 31 Ways Remix: Day 1 Prompt

Well, almost. :) The 31 Days, 31 Ways Remix officially kicks off tomorrow (and the first link up is Friday), but this is your first prompt. Are you as excited as I am?! Over the next 31 days, we’re going to come up with 31 “new,” never-before-worn outfits from your closet.

A few things to consider as we get started:

  • There are a few guidelines to the remix, but the main goal is to come up with 31 new-to-you outfits.
  • Every day I’ll send you a prompt/cheat sheet for the next day’s look. I suggest setting out your outfit the night before. It only takes a few minutes, but seems to save hours the next day.
  • If you’ve tried on a new look and you don’t like it, you don’t have wear it out of the house! (But try on, try on, try on. No excuses! Items always look different on your body than they do on the hanger- another reason I suggest picking out your look the night before! :))
  • Know ahead of time that you won’t love every outfit you come up with, and that’s ok. The goal is to see your closet through new eyes and train yourself to see more combinations. We’re after progress, not perfection!
  • Subscribe to the GTR e-mail list to get tips and tricks a week ahead! (Sign up on the righthand side of the page where it says ‘Free Guide + E-mail Tips.’)

Deep breath. Are you ready?

Today’s challenge is pairing print and color.

Sidenote: the ‘click through for tips’ is just for pinners who find this image outside of GTR. ;)

I’ve decided to use 31 items for my challenge this month. You’ll see them all this Friday, but here’s my first look:

No matter where you’re at in learning how to remix your closet, start applying what you’re learning! Take this prompt (color + print) and use it as a jumping off point to create one new look from your closet.

A few tips + a little inspiration…

  • Dress it up: swap the sandals for a pair of heels, and add a structured jacket. A blazer or boxy jacket would look great, too.
  • Dress it down: add a jean jacket and a pair of flats. Keep the jewelry simple, and you’ve got a great date night or errand-running look. (You have nice clothes, so wear them for “unexciting” things like a grocery run, too. They’ll give you an extra boost of energy.)
  • Take a look at these pattern & color combination Pinterest boards. Look for a photo you can gain inspiration from. Remember, you don’t have to create an exact outfit. Think outside the box as to how you can recreate a look with what you have.

Now go put together an outfit!

If you’re up for it, share your look with us using the hashtag #31days31waysremix. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

Well, this one is easy – I was already planning a color + print look for The Lovely Lookbook Fall Colors, and planning to use 2 of my 20 pieces. How perfect!
I love the color of your skirt! I’ve been gravitating toward greens a LOT lately.

Yay! I’m finally getting a chance to get caught up on all my reading, so I can’t wait to see it! Thanks :) It’s one of my favorite thrifted finds. Hope you have a great week, Selah!

I love what you’re doing here, Caitlin! I’m sorry but I don’t think I’ll be going the challenge this time around. I have a lot to think about right now and I just have to prioritize my time. I will, however, still tune in and see what ya’ll are up to over here though! I’ll probably join in on the cheat sheet ideas but won’t link up each week. I’ll try to hashtag on IG once in awhile though! I absolutely love your emails and I can honestly say I’ve been taking your lessons to heart and applying them! The rule of three – thin layers – all that good stuff! This weekend I reorganized my closet and got rid of some pieces after realizing I replaced them with better fitting pieces. I’m still learning and I’m still growing! I’ve been really pleased with my work outfits so far this year, and I know a lot of it is because of your guidance! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Iris, my pleasure! I’m so proud of you and how you’ve learned and grown so much. It’s been fun to see it give you new energy for other areas of life, too. Thankful for you, friend!

I have always loved the concept of these challenges but way too lazy to participate. Looking forward to seeing your outfits!

BTW, I host a weekly link up on Thursdays and hope that you will join me.

So glad you stopped by, Alice! And thanks for the invitation :)

  • Amy G October 1, 2014 at 7:54 AM

Yay, it’s started! I actually had an outfit in mind to start with that goes with this theme anyway – how convenient! The polka dots look great with the teal here.

    • Caitlin Author October 6, 2014 at 9:28 AM

I know!! I’m so excited :D Thanks, Amy! And that’s awesome- I can’t wait to see all your looks! Have a great day, lady!

  • Victoria B October 1, 2014 at 9:26 AM

I am going to participate here! As it’s my first time I will probably follow your prompts and I will use my whole closet. I want to learn how to remix my wardrobe so I’m just going to get started! I find a capsule wardrobe hard to do since I work in a professional environment and then mostly lounge around at home in my free time, so I almost need two capsule wardrobes and that just seems too much. Thanks!

    • Caitlin Author October 6, 2014 at 9:27 AM

Great! I can’t wait to see what you come up with, Victoria!

  • Deb October 2, 2014 at 3:19 AM

I followed this promt and wore a black floral cami with a coral blazer and black skinnies, I cuffed the sleeves, so covered day 2 also :) Not a brand new outfit but I felt good and looked smart enough for work.

    • Caitlin Author October 6, 2014 at 9:22 AM

That’s great, Deb! Way to roll 2 prompts into one outfit! That’s impressive :)
